Workplace Mediation (Neurodiversity Specialist)
What is Workplace Mediation?
People do not come to mediation because things are easy. They come when communication has broken down, trust feels off, or working relationships have become strained and stressful.
Many workplace conflicts involving neurodivergent employees are not caused by bad intentions. They are caused by misunderstanding, pressure and different communication styles being misjudged.
Direct communication may be mistaken for rudeness. Emotional overwhelm can be viewed as defiance. Someone struggling silently may appear disengaged or inconsistent when they are actually masking difficulties and trying to cope.
Over time these misunderstandings can escalate into stress, grievances, disciplinaries, absence from work and complete breakdowns in communication.
Mediation creates a calm, neutral space where people feel safe enough to speak honestly, be properly heard and start understanding each other differently before situations escalate further.
My Approach
I am a CMC qualified workplace mediator with a specialism in neurodivergence.
Before training as a mediator, I spent over 20 years running and leading businesses. I founded and ran four companies, including one to a £1.8 million turnover, so I understand the real pressures of managing people, performance and conflict at work.
I am not from a HR background, and that matters.
I am not seen as management or there to take sides. People often relax quickly and speak openly because they know I am genuinely impartial.
As an ADHDer and coach to neurodivergent people, I bring lived experience alongside professional training. Neurodivergent employees often feel more comfortable opening up with someone who understands how their brain works.
At the same time, I understand how difficult it can be for managers to balance fairness, accountability and team needs.
Neurodivergence is not an excuse for poor behaviour, but it can absolutely explain why situations, behaviours and communication styles are sometimes misunderstood or misconstrued.
My approach is empathetic but practical. I listen carefully, slow situations down and encourage conversations that build understanding and create realistic ways forward.
What Mediation Can Help With?
Mediation can support situations involving:
• Communication breakdowns between colleagues or managers
• Neurodivergent employees feeling misunderstood or unsupported
• Team tension and conflict
• Emotional reactions or misunderstandings escalating at work
• Difficult conversations being avoided
• Concerns around fairness, communication or workplace relationships
• Situations at risk of progressing into grievances or disciplinaries
Often the earlier these conversations happen, the better the outcome for everyone involved.
Alongside my corporate work, I also volunteer as a mediator for the RNLI, which I find hugely rewarding.
